Fading records: Assessing the stability of archival writing media for public engagement strategy 

Project summary

This project will investigate how commonly used archival writing and printing materials respond to light exposure, helping to balance public access with the long-term preservation of archival collections. Using microfade testing and materials characterisation, the research will assess the light sensitivity of a range of inks, dyes and colourants found in frequently displayed records from the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI). The resulting data will provide an evidence base for understanding which materials can safely be exhibited more widely and which require additional conservation measures.

The findings will support more sustainable access to original archival records by informing decisions on exhibitions, loans, reading room use and public engagement. As a pilot for integrating heritage science into routine archival practice, the project will strengthen conservation decision-making at PRONI while providing guidance that is applicable to archive and library collections more broadly. It will also enhance public understanding of the material nature of archives and the role of conservation science in preserving documentary heritage for future generations.
