Informing the conservation of a heritage bridge through multi-scale characterisation of historic cast iron 

Project summary

This project will investigate the condition and performance of cast iron in a Grade I listed heritage bridge to support evidence-based conservation and engineering decisions. Using advanced materials characterisation, X-ray micro-computed tomography and mechanical testing, the research will examine the bridge’s cast iron at multiple scales, identifying its microstructure, composition, internal defects and corrosion-related damage. By linking these characteristics to structural performance, the project will provide a clearer understanding of how historic cast iron behaves as it ages and deteriorates.

The findings will provide the scientific evidence needed to inform the future conservation and management of this nationally significant heritage structure while minimising intervention in the historic fabric. Beyond this case study, the project will establish a methodological framework for assessing cast-iron bridges and other historic infrastructure across the UK, supporting more accurate condition assessment, improved conservation practice and the long-term resilience of ageing heritage assets.
