‘Pictures in little’: Technical and material insights into a select group of early portrait miniatures through advanced scientific analysis 

Project summary

This project will use state-of-the-art scientific analysis to investigate the materials, techniques, condition and conservation history of selected portrait miniatures from the Royal Collection. By characterising pigments and binding media, identifying evidence of past restoration, and comparing technical data across the selected works, the research will generate new insights into artists’ materials, workshop practices and attribution.

The findings will directly inform the conservation and interpretation of the portrait miniatures for a major exhibition at The King’s Gallery, London (2026) and The King’s Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse (2027). High-resolution technical imaging and new scientific evidence will help audiences explore these works in greater detail, while the results will also enhance the Royal Collection Trust’s online catalogue, support learning programmes, and contribute to international research on portrait miniatures. The project demonstrates the value of collaboration between conservators, curators and heritage scientists in advancing the understanding and long-term care of cultural heritage.
