Project summary
This project will use advanced non-destructive imaging techniques to investigate hidden medieval binding structures within manuscripts from Durham Priory that were extensively rebound during the nineteenth century. By combining X-ray computed tomography and Reflectance Transformation Imaging, the research will identify and document surviving medieval components concealed beneath later bindings, providing new insights into historic book production, binding technologies and the communities that created these manuscripts.
The project will establish the extent to which original medieval binding elements survive, creating detailed digital records and 3D visualisations while avoiding any physical intervention. By combining heritage science, conservation and manuscript studies, the findings will improve understanding of medieval bookbinding practices, support future research into one of Britain’s most important manuscript collections, and demonstrate the value of advanced imaging techniques for investigating rebound historic books.
