Investment Overview
The Conservation and Heritage Science Archive (CHSA) collection is both physical and digital in its nature. The physical collection includes research project samples and mock-ups, the paint stretcher archive, Tate collection specific materials, pigment collections, Winsor and Newton oil and alkyd-based paint swatches, Ripolin paint swatches, a range of modern and contemporary artists paint tubes and paint media collections, over 16,000 cross-sections, dispersions and unmounted samples removed primarily from Tate works of art. The digital collection consists of almost four decades of scientific and research output from the Conservation Science team.
RICHeS investment has enabled the establishment of Tate’s CHSA, including the design and implementation of technological infrastructure to support both storage and access to this new single accessible archive. Access to the CHSA will be facilitated through a request system and primarily through in-person site visits to Tate, supported by dedicated RICHeS staffing. By enhancing discoverability and usability, this investment supports new research and collaborations, advancing knowledge of the materials and techniques of British modern and contemporary art.
