Investment Overview
This facility provides access to external users and collaborators to a range of scientific equipment, facilities and expertise for the analysis of, and research into, materials used in modern and contemporary art. Over the years the team has developed expertise in polymer analysis, exploring the materials and degradation phenomena present in modern paints and plastics, cleaning science and conservation treatment evaluation. The facility does not carry out authentication of works of art. The team is looking to develop collaborations around research and expertise to reflect the changing material nature of Tate’s and other modern and contemporary art collections.
RICHeS investment has strengthened Tate’s capacity to address critical conservation challenges in modern and contemporary art, with new equipment enabling advanced research into complex materials and their preservation. Expanded staff capacity is improving data management, research access, and responsiveness to sector needs. This enhances access to Tate’s specialist knowledge, supporting wider conservation practice and collaboration. This investment is reinforcing Tate’s national and international leadership in conservation, promoting sustainable practices and advancing innovative evidence-based approaches to improve the long-term safeguarding of modern and contemporary art.
