Investment Overview
The Coastal and Inland Waters Heritage Science Facility (CIW) supports research and innovation across the UK’s vulnerable coastal, riverine and lacustrine environments. Based in Archaeology at the University of Southampton and working across disciplines, CIW integrates state-of-the-art equipment with specialist technical expertise to deliver advanced survey, imaging and environmental data integration across the land-water interface. The facility enables research at the water’s edge – where heritage is particularly exposed to climate change and environmental pressures – combining terrestrial, aerial, surface and underwater methods across archaeology, environmental science, oceanography, earth science and engineering.
RICHeS investment has enabled the acquisition of advanced imaging and remote sensing infrastructure and accompanying essential operational infrastructure. Together with the associate staff expertise to operate them, these tools enable seamless, high-resolution data capture across terrestrial, intertidal, shallow-water and submerged environments. The new infrastructure supports an interdisciplinary community of practice and aims to engage diverse audiences through digital and physical outputs, promoting a culture of equipment, data and knowledge exchange. The generated knowledge addresses core heritage science challenges and will contribute to broader disciplines like oceanography, earth science, engineering, geography and renewable energy, providing critical insights into climate change impacts on heritage.
