Investment Overview
The Multiscale Heritage X-ray Imaging Centre strengthens the British Museum’s capabilities in heritage science, to generate new insights into the history, manufacture, condition and preservation of cultural heritage objects. Through access to advanced X-ray imaging technologies, researchers can undertake non-invasive investigations that reveal previously inaccessible information about artefacts, supporting new discoveries and evidence-based conservation.
RICHeS investment has established a dedicated X-ray microtomography (micro-CT) laboratory at the British Museum, enabling high-resolution 3D imaging of heritage materials at the microscopic scale. This capability is delivering more detailed analysis of small and low-density objects, opening new avenues of research into ancient health, production techniques and material composition. Enhanced visualisation and analysis software further supports researchers to extract and interpret complex data from the scans.
Combined with the British Museum’s existing X-radiography Suite, the enhanced infrastructure now provides a comprehensive imaging offer spanning a wide range of object sizes and research needs. A dedicated RICHeS-funded specialist post ensures effective operation of the facility and broad access for the heritage community. By providing researchers with streamlined access to the most appropriate imaging techniques, the centre is enabling new knowledge creation, strengthening heritage research and conservation practice, and improving the interpretation and long-term preservation of cultural heritage collections.
