New narratives of the Norman Conquest: Dating Bosham’s ‘Bayeux Tapestry’ power centre

Project summary

This project will establish the first precise scientific chronology for the early medieval lordly complex at Bosham, the principal power centre of Harold Godwinson and the setting depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry before the Norman Conquest. Using radiocarbon dating of organic remains and historic lime mortars alongside existing dendrochronological evidence, the research will determine the date and development of key buildings, including the recently identified Anglo-Saxon hall and its medieval successors. The resulting chronological framework will provide new evidence for understanding the origins, transformation and legacy of one of England’s most important early medieval elite sites.

The findings will enhance understanding of the impact of the Norman Conquest and demonstrate the value of scientific dating techniques in revealing the development of complex historic sites. The project will support future conservation and heritage management at Bosham, contribute to national research on medieval lordly centres, and inform public engagement through activities linked to the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition and wider programmes celebrating England’s medieval heritage.
