Preserved in Peat: The archaeology of Northern Ireland’s bog finds 

Project summary

This project will apply a range of heritage science techniques to fifteen exceptional organic artefacts recovered from peat bogs in Northern Ireland, including a recently discovered Iron Age bog body, prehistoric textiles, wooden objects, bog butter and other rare finds. Using methods including radiocarbon dating, ancient DNA analysis, micro-computed tomography, X-ray fluorescence, thermogravimetric analysis and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction, the research will investigate the age, manufacture, preservation and environmental context of these remarkable objects.

The project will provide new evidence for prehistoric lifeways, craft production, ritual practices and environmental change, while improving understanding of how these exceptionally preserved artefacts should be conserved and interpreted. By combining scientific analysis with archaeological research, the findings will support museum collections, inform future conservation strategies, contribute to academic research, and enhance public engagement with Northern Ireland’s rich archaeological heritage.
