Project summary
This project will use advanced imaging and analytical techniques to investigate Linear B clay tablets from the Mycenaean palace of Knossos, shifting attention from their inscriptions to their manufacture as archaeological objects. Building on previous geochemical analysis, the research will use X-radiography and micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) to examine how the tablets were made, identify the use of previously unrecognised internal string reinforcements, and compare their production with contemporary pottery to better understand clay sourcing and preparation.
The project will provide new insights into Mycenaean administrative practices, craft production and the manufacture of the earliest known Greek written records. By combining heritage science with archaeological analysis, it will establish innovative methods for studying ancient clay documents, improve understanding of the technologies behind Linear B tablets, and create a foundation for future research across museum collections in Greece, advancing knowledge of Bronze Age administration and material culture.
