The Llyn Llydaw project

Project summary

This project will investigate the maritime and industrial heritage of Llyn Llydaw on the slopes of Snowdon by combining advanced digital survey techniques with archaeological research. Using structured light scanning, LiDAR, multibeam echosounder, sub-bottom profiling and aerial survey, the project will digitally record a medieval logboat, search for a second reported logboat and other submerged vessels, and map the lakebed and surrounding landscape to identify evidence of past human activity, including possible mining-related remains and a potential crannog.

The project will create the first integrated above- and below-water archaeological record of Llyn Llydaw, providing new insights into the relationship between transport, industry and settlement in this important mountain landscape. The resulting digital datasets will support future archaeological investigation, heritage management and public engagement, while establishing a transferable methodology for investigating remote inland water sites and enhancing understanding of Wales’ maritime and industrial heritage.
