Validating photometric stereo for heritage textiles using micro-CT reference models

Project summary

This project will evaluate the accuracy of photometric stereo imaging for recording complex historic textiles by comparing existing digital surface models with high-resolution micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) reference data. Using textile samples that replicate challenging heritage materials, including metallic threads, beads, reflective fibres and varied surface textures, the research will assess how accurately photometric stereo captures fine surface detail and identify where optical effects introduce reconstruction errors.

The project will establish the first robust validation framework for assessing photometric stereo in textile heritage documentation, providing evidence-based guidance for its use in conservation and research. By combining advanced imaging techniques with quantitative analysis, it will improve the reliability of digital records used to study and preserve fragile textile collections, while developing transferable methodologies that can support the documentation of other complex, low-relief heritage objects.
